One of Rock & Roll’s founding vocal groups, The Drifters have recorded a number of “firsts” since their inception in the early 1950’s. They were the first musical group to include string instruments into Rhythm & Blues music with their song “There Goes My Baby” and they were the first musical group to sell two million records with their pop classic, “Up On The Roof.” Additionally, they were the first African American vocal group to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Their classic tune “Under The Boardwalk” is the most played R&B record of all time.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the formation of Cornell Gunter’s Coasters out of the ashes of the surprising breakup of the original Coaster group several months earlier. Among the many hits the group has produced over time include “Charlie Brown,” Yaketey Yak,” “Poison Ivy,” “Love Potion Number 9,” “Peggy Sue,” and “Along Came Jones.”
It was The Platters who crashed through the racial divide that existed between black and white artists during America’s infamous civil rights era. Their debut hit single “Only You (and You Alone)” launched the group as superstars on the world stage. Soon after, “The Great Pretender” propelled them to the number one spot on the charts. Other notable hits include “Magic Touch,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” and “Heaven on Earth.” Their total record sales exceed 200 million, making them one of the Top 25 selling artists of all times (according to Billboard Magazine).
