South Florida’s Gold Coast Derby Grrls To Take On The Sintral Florida Demons At Seminole Casino Coconut Creek Following Adventure At Red Bull Flugtag, July 10
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – The Gold Coast Derby Grrls (GCDG) are coming back to the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek and ready to take on the Sintral Florida Demons from Daytona Beach, July 10 at 7 p.m. Pre-sale tickets for general seating are $10 or $12 at the door. Thrill-seeking fans 21-and-over can get dangerously close to the action by purchasing “suicide seats” in the crash zone for $15 (available at door only, sold by GCDG).. Earlier that day, the Grrls will compete in the world famous Red Bull Flugtag in Bayfront Park, Miami at 10 a.m.
“We are thrilled to have the Grrls back for another bout at the casino,” said Steve Bonner, Seminole Casino Coconut Creek general manager. “It’s going to be a great day- we are expecting dozens of fans to cheer the Grrls on at the flutag and continue the support at the bout later that night. To celebrate what is sure to be an exciting day, festivities will continue during the after party here at Nectar Lounge.”
By night, these are tough athletes, ripping around the derby track on skates, blocking and knocking the competition off and into the crash zone. They go by names like Freek-a-Rella, Pow Pow Panther, and Great Gratzby. But by day, they’re working women. Skater and PR Director Laura Garro (aka Carnivorous Licks) is a comptroller at Everglades Petroleum Tank Service. Christina Annichiarico (Freek-a-Rella) is a professional chef. Linda Partain (Great Gratzby) is a lifeguard, and Meredith Bullard (Pow Pow Panther) is a fulltime mom.
A bout is usually two 30-minute periods with a 15-minute intermission. There are 10 girls on the track at the beginning of every jam, two jammer (one from each team), two pivots (one from each team) and six blockers (three from each team). A jam runs for two minutes, or less, and there could be any given amount of jams in a period. The point of the game is to score as many points, which is done by the jammers, as possible. The blockers assist their perspective jammers and hinder opposing jammers in the scoring of those points. (Derby is sometimes hard to understand from a description so this YouTube video definitely helps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2W2b1WBmm4.)
Fans of the Gold Coast Derby Grrls are encouraged to cheer on the ladies in red, black and white at the legendary Red Bull Flugtag, taking place earlier that same day. In appropriate roller derby form, four members of GCDG will shove a giant homemade, human-powered black roller-skate with 25-foot “wiings” over the Bayfront Park deck, as one of their teammates pilots the 300-pound flying contraption. Following the competition, supporters and the team will roll up to Seminole Casino Coconut Creek to take on their second opponent of the night, the Sintral Florida Demons.
“This is an exciting, new challenge for the Gold Coast Derby Grrls. As if roller derby isn’t extreme enough, we’re taking a gigantic roller skate, spreading its ‘Wiings’ and hopefully soaring over Bayfront Park,” said Jessica Velez (roller derby name, Jess Business), a team coach who skates in the jammer position and will pilot the craft as it takes flight over Miami’s picturesque bay.
Tickets to the roller derby bout at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek can be purchased at the Cashier’s Cage and http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/116960 . For more information about the Gold Coast Derby Grrls, please visit www.goldcoastderbygrrls.com or join their group on Facebook.
